ABOUT ME

I have always loved the outdoors. As a kid, I enjoyed catching frogs and snakes (much to my mom's chagrin), or going trout fishing with friends. I took up backpacking in high school, and a ropes course in my senior year was life-changing. That experience inspired me to learn how to rock climb, and eventually I took up winter mountaineering, as well. I started carrying a camera on my adventures, and photography became a passion in and of itself.

My background as a designer has had an influence on my photography. I'm fascinated by the complex geometries, shapes, colors and textures which nature produces. I love to shoot macro photography, in addition to composing images of landscapes, flowers, and animals.

I've been an environmentalist throughout my life, and that's one of the driving forces behind my desire to shoot nature photography. In this era of climate change, I'm feeling compelled to record the natural world as we currently know it. It appears we are barreling toward a dystopian future, where many species of plants and animals may go extinct, and landscapes will change forever. With rising ocean levels, coastline environments and communities will be inundated, and millions will be displaced. Humankind can still do something, but do we have the political will and the economic sense to act? I truly hope so.

I'm well aware that traveling to remote places and living in my car has a carbon footprint, but it's still less impact than life in a traditional house. The tradeoff is the creation of images that capture the splendor of nature for present and future generations. Beauty feeds the soul and inspires us, and perhaps my nature photography can help motivate others to preserve and protect our planet. This is the only one we have, after all!
